Gabby Abando (2023/4)

Gabby is in her final year as an undergraduate at UBC completing her honour’s degree in Sociology and minoring in Psychology. Her research interests lie in urban and community sociology, more specifically the local spatial factors of immigrant experience for the Filipino Canadian community. She is interested in understanding space, social infrastructure and cities and how their effective use and planning can be conducive to cultivating strong local immigrant communities and a sense of belonging. She is the proud daughter of two Filipino parents, born and raised in Japan, later living in China, now studying and living on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sʔəl̀ilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. When she isn’t studying, she is at the movies, drawing lots of fanart, watching anime, or volunteering at a local rabbit rescue.

Why did you join the ACAM Dialogues cohort?

This is Gabby’s first year in the dialogues cohort and she is beyond eager to be in a space where she can grow alongside her peers in an inclusive, supportive, and enriching space.
